Bali beaches…. from palm fringed white sand on the east coast to the wilder black sand beaches on the west coast, with sleepy undisturbed coves in-between.

Once the haunt of surfers, Bali’s beaches now welcome visitors in search of paradise with superb hotels and excellent facilities. Check our beach guide.

Kuta Beach Area

Kuta, located in southern Bali, was a sleepy fishing village half a century ago, but it has slowly expanded since the 1960s after its long sandy beach was discovered by travellers from Asia and wandering surfers from nearby Australia.

Nowadays Kuta is quite busy and packed with varied accommodation from four-star hotels to budget hostels. Cheap bars and clubs make it a party centre, while local and international restaurants offer great dining. Kuta also offers shopping aplenty, from the chic beachfront ‘Discovery Shopping Mall’ and Kuta Square to the souvenir shops lining Jalan Kartika Plaza, Jalan Pantai Kuta and up to Legian and Seminyak – all within easy walking distance. Despite its negatives, Kuta has its own beauty and attractions and remains one of Indonesia’s major tourist destinations; particularly during the peak season from July to August and the holiday season for Christmas and New Year: at these times Kuta will be fully booked by a local younger crowd, Asian travellers and Australian teenagers who are intent on enjoying an affordable vacation in Bali.

Nusa Dua Beach

Bali’s most prestigious resort area, Nusa Dua is where you’ll find international world – class luxury hotels elegantly lining beautiful white sands.

Quiet and exclusive with superb facilities… you really don’t have to venture far from your luxurious hotel room… but if you do, the rest of Bali’s attractions are within easy access. Located on the Bukit peninsula, in the southern part of Bali, approximately 10 km from the international airport.

Tanjung Benoa

Tanjung Benoa, or the Benoa peninsula just north of Nusa Dua, is a scenic 5 kilometres of coconut palms and fine sand. The area is the almost exclusive home of luxury hotels, private villas, fine restaurants, open air cafes and water sports facilities.

The resort has become busier over recent years with with more hotels like The Conrad Bali Resort and Spa joining impressive resorts like the Aston Bali.

Dunia Fantasi is Jakarta’s own theme park complete with over forty rides and attractions. The theme park is divided into eight regions, which are Indonesia, Jakarta, Asia, Eropa (Europe), Amerika (America), Yunani (Greece), Hikayat (Fantasy) and Balada Kera (Monkey Parody). The theme park complies with international standards through ISO 9001:2000 certification.

Among its most famed attraction is the Halilintar twisted roller coaster ride, Niagara flume ride, Istana Boneka (a local version of Disney’s It’s a Small World) and Balada Kera (Monkey Parody – animatronics show) Theater show. Other attractions include Bianglala (ferris wheel), Kora-Kora (swinging ship) and Poci-Poci (spinning cups ride).

Several of the latest and newest rides are Kicir-Kicir (Power Surge) (2004), Perang Bintang (Star Wars) (2005) – an interactive dark ride, Meteor Attack (2006) and Tornado (Windshear by Zamperla) (2007). Some seasonal attractions include Le Belles cabaret show, Russian Circus and Euro Kids Circus. Major renovation have been completed on the main entrance facade and ticket booths.

One of the most famous attraction is named Rama Sinta. It is a dark ride that retells the famous Indonesian folktale of the same name with advanced technology. However, this ride has been closed due to fire that broke out early in the morning. The theater that used to house the ride has been emptied and converted into a large indoor exhibition hall, occasionally hosting special shows. As of now, there are no publicly announced plans to use the space for future rides.

SeaWorld

Owned by Lippo Group SeaWorld is opened in 1996 as the largest ocenarium in South East Asia of the time. Larger than Singapore’s Underwater World, it features the acclaimed antinessa tunnel as well as other pools including the sea friends pool, main pool, alligator pool, and shark pool.

During its first years of operation, SeaWorld’s crews entered the six meter shark pool without any protection to feed the sharks. This shark pool contains three out of the five most fierce shark species in the world. Once, the shark started attacking the feeding crew. Luckily, the feeding crew was able to escape and survive. However due to this incident, feeding crews are required to enter a steel cage before entering the shark pool.

With it’s famous megalithic stone altars and furniture, spectacular traditional architecture, and complex religious rites, this fasctinating island offers a journey in to the past. Nias island lies approximately 125 km south west of Sibolga city. The land has rolling mountainous terrain, gorges, ravines, and rivers ans is subject to earth quakes. The northern half of the island is sparsely populated and featured large swampy areas.

The local people of Nias called the island as Tano Niha, or land of the people. Ethnically the Niah who called them selves as Ono Niha are mixed of proto-Malay who have had contacts with the Asian Mongolid world. Their exact origin is misty. Many features, practises and cultures are of their own. Untill now those practises and cultures still well maintained. This is the place that you may discover the live of the stone age era. Stone jumping is one of the popular activities which still well preserved.

During the past, this activity is showing the maturity of a man, and used to be meaning to win a war. The stone jumper used to jumped over the enemies trench to get in to the trench and opened the enemies gate for his companion. However now it used to attract visitors.

For the nature sport lover, Nias provides very very excellent spot for surfing. This is one of the world class surf site in our country. We highly recommend you to the the activity during the dry season (April to October) when the waves and the weather still freindly.

To get in to Nias, most of our visitors fly to Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra province. This town is the main entrance gate entering places in North Sumatra and the surrounding area from abroad.

Witness the unique cultures of the Nias People and experience their War Dance which is the only dance in Indonesia performing high skill of acrobatic jumps or Stone jumping performed in the meaning of proving the readiness of man taking wife.

Surfers will call this island “Paradise on Earth”. Together with its beautiful white sandy beach, Lagundri Bay challenge surfers with spectacular waves. In the high season, the waves told to be as high as 3.5 meters. The waves of Sorake Beach on Lagundri Bay have ranked to be within the best ten waves of the world. It is true if some surfers referred of Sorake Beach waves as “the most notorious right-band reef breaks”. There are events held for surfers, including the World Professionals Qualifying Series. Surfers are better being ready when your heart cannot leave this island after a visit.

Lake Toba lies in the northern part of Barisan Mountain Range, which is volcanic and traverses Sumatra Island from northwest to southeast as its backbone. The laketrough is surrounded by precipitous cliffs 400-1,200 m high. Based on the topographic feature and the wide distribution of volcanic ejecta around the lake, some geologists and valcanologists have considered it to be a giant caldera or cauldron. The water surface of L. Toba is 905 m above sea level and about 1,100 km2 wide. The total area of the lake, including the areas of Samosir and Paradapur Islands, amounts to 1,780 km2. The mountains around the lake are called Batak Highlands. The only draining river from L. Toba, the Asahan, flows southeastwards dissecting the gentle slopes of the pyroclastic plateau.

Lake Toba is one of Sumatra’s spectacular sights – a remarkable volcanic crater set in the middle of northern Sumatra, 176km from Medan. The lake is huge (the largest in South-East Asia), occupying the caldera of a giant volcano that collapsed on itself after a massive eruption 100,000 years ago. In comparison, Krakatau’s 1883 effort was little more than a belch. The lake is surrounded by steep mountains, ridges and sandy, pine-sheltered beaches.

PRAPAT
A busy, congested lakeside resort mostly spoiled by tourism. It has a cool, dry climate, pine-covered beaches, and spectacular views. Prapat is the main town on Lake Toba and the principal embarkation point for ferries to Samosir. Balige is an attractive market town on Toba’s southeast shore, 60 km south of Prapat.

SAMOSIR ISLAND
The original home of the Toba Batak, Samosir Island (630 square-km) offers a cool, sunny climate, superb hiking and swimming, royal tombs, dramatic Batak architecture, stonecarvings, and very reasonable accomodation and food. Samosir, the wedge-shaped island in the middle of the lake, is thought to have been created by subsequent upheavals between 30,000 and 75,000 years ago. Samosir has long been northern Sumatra’s premier attraction for travellers and has an abundant supply of accommodation and eateries ringing the shoreline. The main town in the area is Parapat, on the eastern shore of Lake Toba.

BERASTAGI
This picturesque hill town in the Karo Highlands, 70km from Medan, is dominated by two volcanoes: Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Sibayak. At 1300m (4260ft) above sea level, the climate is pleasantly cool and the atmosphere refreshingly relaxed. Travellers come to Berastagi to experience the culture of the Karo Batak people and to go trekking. There are guided treks into the Gunung Leuser National Park and to surrounding volcanoes and attractions.

The second largest island in Indonesia – is in the fourth place in procuring total visits of foreign tourists following Jakarta, Bali and Batam. This region has a remarkable panorama, thick with virgin forests, lush vegetation, strong rivers, beautiful waterfalls, peaceful sandy beaches and large ancient lakes. The diversity of arts, people and culture literally make Sumatra a Garden of Eden for social scientists and culture seekers. Sumatra has indeed reliable nature and cultural tour objects:

Sea Gardens
Pulau Weh (Weh Island) – at the northwestern end of Sumatra – is a beautiful island of dense jungle, high hill-top views, palm-lined beaches and mysterious rocky coves. There is also a fresh water lake and a semi-active vulcano on the island. Near by Rubiah island is famous for its excellent coral reefs and spectacular array of tropical fish. A great place for snorkeling and diving. There are several licensed diving schools on the island.

Gunung Leuser National Park
This is one of the largest national parks in the world, containing over 800.000 ha. of virgin rainforest. The park is home to the Orang Utan, gibbons, tigers, elephants and among the last of the Sumatran rhino. There are research facilities for the study of primates, birds and insects.

Bukit Lawang
The Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center where formerly captive apes are re-introduced into the wild. One of the most popular tourist destinations in North-Sumatra. There was a worst flood happened on November 2003. This area is re-opened for tourist and for the time being we can only stay in one accommodation.

Tangkahan

Tangkahan is a part of the Gunung Leuser National Park (Leuser Mountain), found in North Sumatra and Aceh Province. This is one of the largest National Parks in the World, with over 7750 Km2 of mountains, rivers and rainforests stretching across Sumatra to the beaches of the Indian Ocean, presenting an incredibly diverse ecosystem. Tangkahan covers a 100 Km2 area. The National Park protects more than 120 different species of mammals, including the Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), elephant (Elephas maximus) and the orangutan (Pongo abelii). For the more fortunate who stay at Tangkahan you may see Rusa deer (Cervus unicolour), wild boar (Sus scrofa) or the clouded leopard cat (Neofelis nebulosa) whos tracks can be seen around the paths or even the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii).

Lake Toba

One of the largest and deepest lakes in Southeast Asia. In the middle Samosir island. Toba has developed into a full-featured highland resort while retaining the rustic charm and relaxed ambiance that define Toba’s attraction.

Bukittinggi

The heart of the highlands, Bukittinggi is a pleasant two-hour drive from the West-Sumatra provincial capital of Padang through the gorgeous Anai Valley up to the Agam Plateau. Located 930 meter above sea level, Bukittinggi (formerly called Fort De Kock by the Dutch) has a cool climate and is surrouned by three vulcanoes: Tandikat, Singgalang and Merapi. The central landmark is the town’s clock tower, referred to by the locals as Jam Gadang. It’s overlooks the market square, a beehive of activity. A fantastic place to do shopping in souvenir shops. Nearby Kota Gadang is renowned for its fine silver filigree and hand embroidery. On the outskirts of Bukittinggi there is a 150 meter deep canyon called Ngarai Sianok (Sianok Canyon). It is an incredibly winding through the bottom of the steep-walled canyon. West Sumatrans claim it is unrivalled for natural beauty in all of Indonesia.

Lake Maninjau

A crater lake, its scenery rivals Lake Toba on a smaller scale. One of West Sumatra’s most famous sights. There are facilities for swimming, water skiing and a good selection of hotels and restaurants. The village of Matur, overlooking the lake, arranges dance performances on request. Another ideal place for recreation – 36 km from Bukittinggi – is Lake Singkarak, the longest in West Sumatra.

Kerinci-Seblat National Park

Home to rhino’s, tigers, elephants, bears and orang-utans, the Kerinci sprawls across four provinces, making it Sumatra’s largest national park. The scenery is magnificent, dominated by volcanic cones including the highest peak in Western Indonesia Mount Kerici. Lake Kerinci is the best place to sight the park’s famous bird life.

Kubu Pimitive Tribe

Is a tribe inhabiting the foothill of Bukit Barisan in the central parts of Sumatra, Indonesia, in the vicinity of Palembang and Jambi. They are the last-known hunter-gatherers society in Southeast Asia. They are nomadic peoples living by constructing temporary wooden shelters in forested areas until game and resources dwindle. They live entirely in the forests in shelters of branches and leaves built on platforms. They have developed ingenious way to effectively use available resources to survive. For instance, they beat the stripped bark of a poisonous tree into the waters to catch fish. The fish are stunned by the poisionous bark and surface for easy catching. They have developed unique wooden traps for each type of game animal in their vicinity.

Legian and Seminyak were small villages a few years ago a short distance from Kuta. Now part of the greater Kuta area, both offer quieter alternatives and a more sophisticated nightlife scene focusing on dining-out and socialising rather than full-on partying.

Where to Stay
Both Legian and Seminyak have seen extensive development over the last few years, with boutique and first class hotels like the Legian Beach Hotel, Bali Mandika, Bali Padma and Jayakarta adding to local family-owned guest houses and hotels like the Paradiso and White Roses Hotel.

Seminyak has some excellent boutique and five star resorts with lovely gardens, Asian style and Balinese features. Recommended: The Pelangi Bali, The Oberoi, The Legian, The Villas Bali, Villa Seminyak Lagoon and Spa, Sofitel Seminyak, Lumbung Bali and Coconut Homes and Villas.

What to Do – Legian
On the beach… Legian and Seminyak have a more laid back beach style – less hustle, fewer vendors, but good facilities. You can rent surfboards, play volleyball, or just relax and take in the scene. All on the beach.

Close to the action but far enough for some down time, Legian still retains something of its village atmosphere and is easy to walk around. Good shopping, restaurants and, while nightlife is not so frantic, Legian does have its own entertainment scene around Jalan Gado-Gado.

about six km west of Singaraja north coast Bali. Its the popular beach resort of Lovina is a long stretch of black sand bordering the coastal villages of Anturan, Tukad Mungga, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus. Numerous hotels and restaurants have sprung up here, lining the coast for some 7 km. The pace of life at Lovina reflects the calmness and safety of the sea. This is an excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling, particularly near the reef, and local boats are for hire. The sunsets at Lovina are particularly spectacular.

The name “Lovina” was coined by the last king of Buleleng. A convert to Christianity, he gave the name to a small tract of land that he purchased at Kaliasem, where he built the Tasik Madu (“Sea of Honey”) Hotel in the 1960s. The name Lnvina sigaifies the “love” that is contained “in” the heart of all people

Near the northern tip of the island of Bali lies a stretch of villages by the Bali Sea. Lovina Beach is the name. Lovina is really a string of coastal villages to the west of Singaraja. Escape from the hustle and bustle of Kuta to Lovina Beach located in north Bali, about 100 kilometers from southern tourist hotspots. It is well known as an excellent site for sunset watching, snorkeling, and diving. Darkly beautiful, Lovina offers quiet and calm, and is popular Asian tourists and those avoiding the hustle and bustle of the southern beaches. A number of coves offer tranquil, protected waters and Lovina is one of them. Although the sand is grey, it is quiet and peaceful, and popular among those who shun the glitzier beach resorts of the south. It is a popular place for dolphin watching; dolphins play in the water off Lovina. Famous for its early morning dolphin-watching boat trips, Lovina also offers good snorkeling and diving, and trekking in the nearby mountains. Diving off Menjangan Island, part of the Bali Barat National Park, is generally regarded as the best in Bali. Boats are readily available to take divers over to the island, where there are no residents or hotels.

Nightlife activities are also abound, as well as chartered boats to go out into the sea. If we like what Kuta offers but do not like the crowd. With a wonderful variety of hotels, restaurants and bars located on or very near the calm beach, Lovina offers something for everyone. It is also a good base to take day trips to the nearby attractions of north and west Bali.
